On Thursday, October 5th, Samoa joined many countries around the world in celebrating World Teachers’ Day.  To commemorate this special day, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture organized a program to honour the services of all teachers in Samoa and their contribution to education in our society.

The theme for this year is “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers” and was highlighted through a series of activities. These included a parade of floats, banners and posters by different districts and displays at booths set up in front of the Government building.

After the official opening, performances were given by Avele College, Leifiifi College and the Teachers’ Cultural Group. Guest speakers included Alo Dr Silia Pa’usisi from NUS, Hope Anzac a student from Mata-Ae-Vave College in Savaii, and Ari Hazelman representing the Disability Community.

A series of awards were presented to the most outstanding teachers in various aspects of their service. The finale was the Prize Giving for the floats, banners and posters presented, judged by a selected panel of judges from the NUS, MWCSD and STA. The closing remarks were given by the Honorable Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Afioga Loau Solamalemalo Keneti Sio.
